Album Review: Dom: Sun Bronzed Greek Gods [EP]

First chorus: “It’s so sexy/Living in America.” Second chorus: “Burn bridges/Make yourself an island.” Third chorus: “Gimme gimme/Something to believe in.” Throw in the inscrutably shiny haze of synthesizers, and you’ve got the brand of indecipherable ingenuousness that’s always in style, but, lucky for us, Dom has so much cool grace that doesn’t really matter doesn’t really matter.

7/10
Released May 1, 2010 on Burning Mill Records

Follows...a couple other summer shoegaze indie acts.
Precedes...the future irreconcilable divorce of indie music and summer fun.
Spoils...the emotional revelations of all your favorite movies.

Highlights:

Burn Bridges

Jesus

Hunny

Album Review: Sleigh Bells: Treats

Remember that time you were an elementary school badass? Yeah, well, apparently Sleigh Bells does. Mixing air raid guitars with bubble gum vocals might’ve been a gimmick. Instead, it’s a genre-conscious leviathan that rarely forgets its confidence. About 30 seconds of my day is spent wondering why it isn't Slay Bells.

8/10
Released May 11, 2010 on Mom & Pop Records, N.E.E.T. Records

Follows...the culture that came before it.
Turn the volume...down. It's gonna be loud anyway.
Start your own...mainstream.

Highlights:

Rill Rill: Short list for best song of the year.

Crown on the Ground: Find out who your friends really are in the initial wail before the beat.

A/B Machines: Raw and untouchable.

Album Review: Stars: The Five Ghosts

The Five Ghosts compromises Stars’ trademark lyrical theatrics with omnipresent synths, creating what is, at best, a nonchalant melodrama, and, at worst, a trite mess. Everyone takes themselves too seriously sometimes, and, when that self-indulgence does strike, it's not even a matter of staying restrained or self-aware—Stars thrive when they're neither. It's a matter of sounding honest and memorable. Also, what’s the point of having Amy Milan in your band if you turn her into a chipmunk?

4/10
Released June 21, 2010 on Vagrant

Follows...the unseamlessly political 2007 "In Our Bedroom After the War"
Listen instead to...their 2004 masterpiece "Set Yourself on Fire"
When there's nothing left to burn...you have to set yourself on fire.

Highlights:

I Died So I Could Haunt You: Oh yeah, and most of the album is about death.

Wasted Daylight: A nicely complex spin on their usual healthy/unhealthy relationship theme.

Changes: My favorite track here, and the most straightforward.
